The Story

Small Savanna, Big Flavor

Sabaneta means "small savanna" — a flat, open plain that was farmland until very recently. This is the smallest municipality in the Medellín metro area at just 15 km², but it's also one of the fastest-growing. Ten years ago, Sabaneta was where you went to escape the city. Today, it's packed with new restaurants, cafes, and residential towers rising from what were cow pastures.

The main draw is simple: authentic food at local prices. While El Poblado's restaurants cater to tourists and expats, Sabaneta's restaurants cater to paisas. A full bandeja paisa that costs COP $60,000 in Poblado costs COP $20,000 here — and it's arguably better because the recipes haven't been "elevated" for foreign palates.

The heart of Sabaneta is the Iglesia de Santa Ana and the Parque de Sabaneta — a charming central square where families gather on evenings, food vendors sell arepas and empanadas, and the pace of life is noticeably slower than anywhere else in the metro area. It's the kind of place that makes you want to stay longer than you planned.

Good to Know

Local Knowledge

Smallest in the Metro

At just 15 km², Sabaneta is the smallest municipality in the Medellín metro area. You can walk across the main area in under 30 minutes. Everything is close.

Farmland to Foodie Town

Until the 2000s, Sabaneta was mostly rural — farms, cattle, and open fields. The restaurant boom is less than 10 years old. The growth is staggering.

Iglesia de Santa Ana

The iconic church overlooking Parque de Sabaneta is the spiritual and social heart of town. On Sundays, the entire community gathers here — mass, food stalls, and socializing.

50% Cheaper Than Poblado

A full traditional Colombian lunch in Sabaneta costs COP $12,000-$20,000. The same meal in El Poblado would be COP $35,000-$60,000. Same food, local prices.

Tower Boom

Sabaneta is in the middle of a construction boom — new residential towers, shopping centers, and restaurants opening monthly. The skyline changes every few months.

Connected by Metro

Sabaneta has its own Metro station (Sabaneta on Line A), making it one of the easiest southern destinations to reach. The metro ride from Poblado is just 15 minutes.
